The Origin of Holi Powder Gulal, also known as as Abir, is the name provided to the coloured powders utilized for the typical Hindu Holi celebration. Throughout this celebration, which commemorates love and equality, individuals toss these powders at each other while singing and dancing. From Natural To Chemical In earlier times, Gulal powders were prepared from flowers originating from trees, such as the Indian Coral Tree and the Flame of the Forest, that had medical properties, beneficial to the skin and overall health. After the arrival of artificial dyes in the middle of 19th century, the disappearance of trees in city locations and the pursuit of mass production resulted in the desertion of natural colours. In some cases, newer dyes have been produced through chemical procedures with non-standard specifications and thus the resulting colors are often harmful for contact. Hazardous items have actually been sold on the roadway by traders, in boxes with labels stating "for commercial usage only". Hardly a way to celebrate the Holi Festival...
